This vintage Beni Ouarain rug was love at first sight! It has soft and dense wool with a beautiful shine and is in perfect condition. The natural colour of the wool is complemented with dark brown patterns. The small symbols that are asymmetrically integrated make this rug extra special. Notice that the year 1978 is also woven into the design. This truly is a one of a kind and timeless piece.
Beni Ouarain rugs were created by a confederation of 17 Berber tribes in the Middle Atlas mountains of Morocco. The rugs were made to keep them warm in the harsh weather conditions in the mountains during winter. Not only to warm the floors but also as beds and heavy blankets. The sheep that are raised here on high altitude produce an extra soft and dense wool.
Moroccan rugs were initially made as functional pieces for personal use. These rugs were meant to last for decades and often handed down from generation to generation. The design is a combination of traditional Amazigh symbols with the interpretation and imagination of the weaver. Each piece is unique. This level of craftmanship could take up to weeks or even months to complete a single rug.
